Understand your skin type
One mistake people make, especially skincare newbies is getting into skincare without knowing what your skin type is.
Knowing your skin type will help you choose products made specifically for your skin type and will give you the results you want. This will also stop you from impulsively buying trendy skincare products.
Using the wrong products for your skin type can cause breakouts, irritation, or excessive dryness.
There are the popular skin types:
Oily skin – Produces excess sebum, leading to acne and clogged pores.
Dry skin – Lacks moisture, often appearing flaky or irritated.
Combination skin – Oily in some areas (usually the T-zone) and dry in others.
Sensitive skin – Reacts easily to products, often becoming red or inflamed.
Normal skin – Balanced with minimal skin concerns.
There is a popular simple test you can do to help you figure out your skin type and you can read all about it here.
Have a solid morning and night skincare routine.
A solid skincare routine is the foundation of clear skin. The key is simplicity and consistency—too many products can overwhelm your skin and cause problems.
Morning Routine
- Gentle Cleanser – Start with a mild, non-stripping cleanser to remove overnight oil buildup. Here are the best Korean cleansers for dry and oily skin.
- Hydrating Toner – Balances your skin’s pH and preps it for the next steps. These Korean toners for oily skin are worth checking out
- Vitamin C Serum – Brightens skin, fades dark spots and fights free radicals.
- Lightweight Moisturizer – Keeps skin hydrated without blocking pores.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) – This is nonnegotiable. Using sunscreen consistently has helped my skin the most and it’s the reason my hyperpigmentation faded so much quicker. It Guards against UV damage that can worsen scarring and aging. Korean sunsticks have been trending and making sunscreen reapplication so much easier.
Nighttime Routine
- Double Cleanse – First use an oil cleanser or a cleansing balm for makeup and sunscreen, then follow with a gentle foam or gel cleanser.
- Exfoliate (2-3x a week) – Use a gentle chemical exfoliant like glycolic or salicylic acid to clear pores and remove dead skin.
- Targeted Treatment (if needed) – Apply specific treatments like benzoyl peroxide for active breakouts or retinol for skin renewal.
- Hydrating Serum – Use hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to boost moisture and calm redness.
- Moisturizer – Lock in hydration and protect your skin barrier.
Weekly Additions
- Clay Mask (1-2x a week) – Draws out excess oil and cleans pores deeply.
- Sheet Mask (1-2x a week) – Gives skin an extra boost of hydration and nutrients.
Fix your diet
Your diet directly affects your skin foods can trigger breakouts while others help heal and protect. This is why you have to make sure you’re eating clean.
Foods rich in antioxidants (like berries, spinach, and green tea) fight inflammation. Those high in omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds) can help reduce breakouts.
Probiotic foods (like yogurt, kimchi, and kefir) improve gut health, which leads to clearer skin.
Foods with high water content (such as cucumbers, watermelon, oranges) keep your skin hydrated.
However, some foods can make breakouts worse. Dairy products may trigger hormonal acne in some people. High-glycemic foods (like white bread, sugar, and fast food) can increase oil production by spiking insulin levels. Processed snacks and sugary drinks can also cause inflammation and skin problems.
Apart from eating clean, I have been taking this juice for glowing skin and have seen a drastic improvement in my skin. I highly recommend you try it out. It’s very delicious too.
Lifestyle habits that improve the skin
Implementing healthy habits can help you get clear skin even faster than expected. Here are some to start doing:
- Make sure you’re drinking enough water. This helps to flush out toxins and keep your skin hydrated. If you’re having a hard time with water intake, you should get a water bottle or a Stanley cup and take it everywhere you go. This will make you want to drink more water when you always have water with you. You can also add a few slices of lemon and/or cucumber inside to make it refreshing.
- Change your pillowcase regularly. Bacteria and oils build up and these can cause you to break out. Also, switch to satin pillowcases if you’re not using them already. Your skin and hair will thank you.
- Clean your phone screen. This is one of the leading causes of acne yet it doesn’t get talked about enough. Your phone collects so much dirt and bacteria because we are always holding it and keeping it in random places. Make sure you clean your phone daily with those mini alcoholic wipes.
- Get enough sleep: make sure you’re getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
- Manage stress. High stress leads to increased cortisol levels, triggering breakouts. Try meditation, exercise, or journaling.
- Be consistent with your skincare routine. To see the results you want, you have to keep doing your routine regularly
- Stop touching your face
- Patch test new products
- Seek professional help when needed
