Switch to a hydrating cleanser
Switching to a hydrating cleanser in winter is crucial because colder temperatures and low humidity levels can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Foam cleansers for oily skin might be too harsh, leading to over-drying and potential irritation. A hydrating cleanser helps retain essential oils, preventing excessive dryness while effectively removing impurities. This shift in your skincare routine ensures a balance between oil control and hydration, promoting a healthier and more comfortable complexion during the winter months.
Start taking shorter showers with warm water
I know it can be tempting to take long hot showers because it feels so good but overtime, this can damage your skin. It drys your skin out and weakens your skin barrier. Instead, opt in for warm showers and use less body wash and shampoo to cut your shower time down. Try my that girl shower routine.
Make Vaseline (petroleum jelly) your best friend
Vaseline is so good for retaining moisture, preventing dryness and slugging. Slugging refers to a skincare trend where individuals apply a thick layer of occlusive moisturizer, often petroleum jelly (like Vaseline), before bedtime. This forms a “slug-like” barrier, sealing in moisture and preventing water loss overnight. I literally can’t live without Vaseline now because I use it for everything.
Invest in a humidifier
A humidifier is really essential for winter. You won’t know how much of a difference it makes till you start using one. During winter, the air tends to be very dry and using a humidifier puts moisture back into the air. This will prevent your skin from drying out and you even get to breathe better. I highly recommend.
Go for thicker moisturizers
If you have an oily skin, it’s advisable to go for lightweight moisturizers but during winter, consider those with occlusives and hydrating ingredients such as glycerin and ceramides. Such moisturizers are designed to create a protective barrier on the skin’s surface, preventing water loss and enhancing hydration.
Don’t forget your lips
Our lips suffer the most during winter which is why we need to take extra care of them. Always keep your lips moisturized using a lip balm, exfoliate them regularly. Here are my favourite Korean lip balms.
Continue wearing your sunscreen regardless
A big misconception people have about sunscreen is that you should use it only when it’s sunny. There are still harmful uv rays even when it’s cloudy or snowing. Make sure you’re applying your sunscreen daily and reapply every 2 hours using a sunstick.
Use sheet masks/ hydrating Masks consistently
I absolutely love using sheet masks during winter because of the added hydration it provides. There are so many great and affordable sheet masks out there especially Korean sheet masks that you can try. Sleeping masks and toner pads are also great alternatives because not only do you wake up with a hydrated skin, your skin will be glowing and looking super healthy.
Use scarves when you’re going out
The wind can be very harsh during winter and this can quickly dry out your skin and damage your skin barrier. Consider using scarves when you’re going to keep your face and neck warm and prevent heat loss.
Don’t over complicate your skincare routine
Another mistake that people make a lot is they think they need a whole new routine during winter. All you have to do is to make the necessary adjustments. Switch to more hydrating products, avoid over exfoliating, go easy with actives and don’t give up. It’s gets better, trust me.
