How to prepare for the new year
Reflect on the previous year
Reflecting on the past year is crucial in preparing for a meaningful New Year reset. It involves more than just skimming the surface; it requires delving into your experiences, understanding your emotions, and extracting valuable lessons. It’s important to reflect so that we can see how far we’ve come, the lessons we have learned, and how to improve for the upcoming year.
My 2024 life planner Notion template has a whole page dedicated to reflection. The reflection prompts provided are simple yet so powerful and it also has a wheel of life balance exercise at the end that made me realize what I needed to prioritize more. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for an all-in-one life planner that’s simple yet very functional and effective.
If you prefer to write things down, here are some of my favorite reflection prompts you can use:
- • What accomplishments are you most proud of from the past year?
- • What were the major challenges you faced in the past year and how did you overcome them?
- • In what ways have you grown as an individual over the past year?
- • What new skills or knowledge did you acquire throughout the year?
- Favorite memories from the year?
- • How did you make a positive impact, whether big or small?
You shouldn’t rush this process and be as honest as possible with yourself. This reflective exercise sets the stage for intentional goal-setting and a purposeful approach to the New Year ahead.
PS: Here is a 2024 notion template tour if you’re interested.
Set goals and create a vision board
During this step, we tend to set over-ambitious goals and later wonder why it didn’t work out. Remember, a year isn’t really a long time so set goals that you can achieve within that time frame.
When setting goals it’s important to make sure:
- They are SMART
- Align with your values
- Can be broken down into smaller goals
- Flexible
One method of goal setting I am going to try this year is the 12-week year method. It’s based on the 12 week year book by Brian P. Moran
You basically set goals for just 12 weeks (a quarter) focus on them and Try your best to achieve them. I already have a 12-week plan template in my life planner so I am going to use that to plan out mine.
Once you have set your goals, it’s time to create a vision board.
A vision board is a powerful tool that transforms your aspirations and goals into a tangible, visual representation. It serves as a constant reminder of your dreams, motivating you to stay focused and aligned with your objectives.
A lot of people like to actually print out the pictures and create a physical vision board but I prefer to do mine in a digital format so that I can save it as my phone and laptop wallpaper. That way, I get to see it all the time. I also have one on my notion dashboard.
To make one is very simple. Go on Pinterest or through magazines and get pictures that are similar to the goals you want to achieve and put them all together in a collage. You can add inspiring quotes as well and make sure you personalize it.
Creating a vision board is a fun and creative way to manifest your dreams. By regularly engaging with it, you reinforce your commitment to your goals and keep your aspirations at the forefront of your mind.
Declutter
This is a step you must not skip. Decluttering your space is a transformative process that extends beyond mere tidiness—it’s a powerful tool for fostering mental clarity and creating an environment that supports your well-being.
This process might take you a few days if you don’t declutter occasionally but trust me you will feel much better once it’s all done.
Go through your closet, drawers, and everything you own and decide if you want to keep it, donate it, recycle it, or trash it.
Your decluttering shouldn’t stop at just the physical aspect, make sure you declutter digitally as well.
Go through your devices delete unnecessary photos, files, apps, and folders, and reorganize everything. On your social media apps as well, make sure you unfollow accounts that don’t inspire you anymore or add value to your life.
Build routines and Habits
Establishing routines and cultivating positive habits is a foundational strategy for achieving consistency, productivity, and personal growth.
This is what I really want to focus on in the first quarter of the year. I want to have a consistent morning and night routine as well as a workout routine in place. I already have a skincare routine that I follow and love so that’s out of the way already.
To build a routine, you need habits that will help you achieve that. To build a consistent morning and night routine, I want to have a consistent sleep schedule first. Once that’s out of the way, every other thing will follow easily.
Here are some tips to help you build effective routines and habits:
• Begin with manageable tasks and expand gradually.
• Identify habits that trigger positive behaviors.
• Define the purpose of each routine or habit.
• Associate new habits with existing cues.
• Keep a record of efforts to stay motivated.
• Acknowledge and celebrate small achievements.
In my life planner notion template, I have a weekly habit tracker that works amazingly and it’s so easy to use. I also have a spread where I am going to build my ideal morning and night routines.
Reflect, restrategize, and keep going
It’s important to reflect consistently to make sure you’re still on track with your goals. I love to do monthly reflections on my goals and it has been a game changer. Remember it’s also okay to change your goals through the year if they no longer serve you.
