Common causes of dark inner thighs
- Friction (chafing): One of the most common causes of dark inner thighs. It’s repeated skin rubbing and it gets worse if the weather is hot and you’re sweating down there or when you’re exercising. Chafing can also happen when you wear tight clothes.
- Hormonal changes like PCOS or pregnancy can cause the skin to be darker
- Dry skin: if your skin is dry down there, this can increase the friction hence making the skin darker
- Obesity: if you’re overweight, the more friction and pressure on your inner thighs can make it darker
- Sweating: if you sweat a lot down there, this can cause moisture buildup, making the skin more irritated, making it darker, and probably making you smell funky down there.
Simple changes to make to avoid further darkening
Now that we know the main causes of dark inner thighs, it is important we know what to do to stop them from getting darker even further. This will also help in maintaining a clear, smooth, bright inner thigh once we finally get rid of the darkness.
- Start wearing more loose clothes, especially during the summer. Sundresses are my go-to summer clothes. This reduces the friction leading to less chaping. It also ensures there is enough air circulation down there therefore making you less sweaty which helps a lot.
- Be well moisturized. Make sure your skin is not dry. Use a good moisturizer that’s very hydrating and doesn’t leave any glowy finish.
- Change your routine. If you’re overweight, start working out and eating healthy. Once you lose a few pounds, your thighs won’t have much friction.
How to get rid of dark inner thighs
it’s important to start slow and build up. To get rid of dark inner thighs, try the following routine.
Cleanse, exfoliate, treat, and moisturize
Cleanse
When it comes to cleansing, I highly recommend giving kojic acid soap a try. It has done wonders for me and I believe it can do the same for you. When you apply the soap, let it sit for about 2-3 minutes before you rinse it off. A lot of people also swear by turmeric soap but I haven’t tried it yet I believe it will work as well because turmeric is a very good brightening agent.
For beginners, start using kojic acid soap 2-3 times a week only. This will stop your skin from getting irritated.
Using body washes with salicylic or glycolic acid works too. Here are some great body washes for glowing skin if you need recommendations.
Exfoliate
While physical exfoliation is good, I prefer chemical exfoliation. It’s less irritating and works better.
My go-to chemical exfoliant is the ordinary glycolic acid toner. This is so good for brightening the skin. Here is a detailed review of the ordinary glycolic acid toner In case you don’t know what it is and 15 creative ways you can use it.
Since it’s a chemical exfoliant, I don’t recommend using it daily. Use it 2-3 times a week as well. I like to use it on days when I’m not using my kojic acid soap to cleanse so that my skin doesn’t get irritated with all the activities.
Another great alternative to glycolic acid is lactic acid. It’s more gentle and great for those with sensitive skin.
Treat
For treatment, products and serums with Ingredients known to work for dark spots and hyperpigmentation are great options. If you have a serum that works well for you especially on your face to fade your dark spots, consider using it on your inner thighs as well.
If you don’t, look for a serum with any of the following ingredients:
Alpha Arbutin
Licorice Root Extract
Azelaic Acid
Tranexamic Acid
Moisturize
Last but not least, make sure your skin is properly moisturized.
A very good moisturizer to use is the Amlactin Lotion. Although be warned, it has a funky smell but it works well for evening out your skin tone and getting rid of dark spots while moisturizing the skin.
