Blackheads can be so annoying especially when you have tried everything and nothing seems to be working. That used to be my case a few months ago but not anymore. I finally found out how to get rid of blackheads easily and effectively. In this post, I’m going to share all you need to know about blackheads, what causes them, how to get rid of blackheads, and other helpful tips. Let’s get into it.
Disclaimer: let’s get into it
What are blackheads?
Blackheads, also known as open comedones, form when dead skin cells, oil (sebum), and debris clog a pore. Unlike whiteheads, which are closed and appear as small white bumps, blackheads remain open at the surface. When the trapped oil and debris are exposed to air, they oxidize, turning dark.
What causes blackheads?
Blackheads develop when excess oil, dead skin cells, and debris clog pores. Overproduction of oil increases the risk, while improper shedding of dead skin leads to buildup.
Hormonal fluctuations—especially during puberty, pregnancy, or menstruation—can further stimulate oil production, making blackheads more common. Using heavy, pore-clogging skincare or makeup worsens the issue.
Another major cause of blackheads is Poor skincare habits, like inadequate cleansing or infrequent exfoliation, allowing impurities to accumulate.
How to get rid of blackheads
I have tried a lot of remedies including natural remedies and pore strips but I have found out that the most effective way of getting rid of blackheads is by double cleansing.
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing is a two-step face cleansing method that involves using an oil-based cleanser first, followed by a water-based cleanser.
Throughout the day, your skin accumulates oil, dirt, makeup, sunscreen, pollution, and sweat—all of which can clog pores and contribute to breakouts or dullness. A single cleanse often isn’t enough to remove everything, especially if you’re using long-wearing sunscreen or makeup. Double cleansing thoroughly removes impurities without stripping the skin, preventing buildup and helping your skincare products absorb better.
How to double Cleanse
Double cleansing is very simple and should be done at night only.
- Apply an oil cleanser or a cleansing balm and massage it into your skin for about 2 minutes. Make sure you focus on problem areas such as your nose, chin and forehead. After 2 minutes, add a little water to your face and continue massaging your face in circular motion. You will notice that the cleanser has emulsified (has become milky). Rinse with warm water. After this first cleanse, you will notice that your skin is soft and visibly clearer.
- Next, use a water based cleanser. The second step removes any remaining dirt, sweat, and water-based debris while addressing specific skin concerns (e.g., acne, hydration, or brightening). Massage it into your skin for about a minute and rinse properly.
A lot of people believe that using an oil cleanser will clog your pores further since it’s oil but that’s not true. Oil attracts oil, so this step effectively removes oil-based impurities without disrupting the skin barrier.
Another important thing is to make sure you’re using a good oil cleanser that has clean ingredients. Currently, Korean oil cleansers have some of the best oil cleansers out there and all the ones I’ve used so far are worth the hype. They are also very affordable and a bottle lasts a long time. Here are some of my all-time favorite oil cleansers:
Best oil cleansers

The Face Shop is a brand I heard of only recently and this cleansing oil is one of the best in the market right now for less than $10! Other helpful tips on how to get rid of blackheads
- Exfoliate regularly (but not too much) – Limit exfoliation to 2-3 times a week to prevent clogged pores while protecting your skin from irritation. Here are some great Korean exfoliating toners and another great option will always be the ordinary glycolic acid solution.
- Change pillowcases frequently – Replace them every few days to avoid the buildup of bacteria, oil, and dirt that can transfer to your skin. Switch to satin pillowcases as well if you’re not using them already.
- Maintain a balanced diet – Minimize dairy and high-glycemic foods while prioritizing hydration, fruits, and vegetables for clearer skin. I currently love this natural juice for glowing skin and so far, I’m slowly seeing improvement with my skin.
- Stay consistent – Remember that skincare is a journey! You’ll start seeing noticeable improvements within 2-4 weeks of regular treatment.
