Hada Labo Shirojyun Whitening Lotion review
Table of Contents
Hada Labo is a brand I first came across on TikTok and after learning more about the brand, I’m happy to announce that I have purchased my very first Japanese skincare product, the Hada Labo Shirojyun Whitening Lotion. This isn’t as popular as the hada labo Goku Jyun range which focuses on moisturizing and hydrating the skin. The Hada Labo Shirojyun Whitening Lotion is part of the Shirojyun range which focuses on brightening the skin.
I have been using this toner for a few weeks now and here is my honest review.

About Hada Labo
Hada Labo is a renowned Japanese skincare brand known for its focus on hydration and minimalistic formulas. Their products feature hyaluronic acid to deeply moisturize, and they emphasize simplicity, making them great for sensitive skin. With lines like “Gokujyun” for hydration and “Shirojyun” for brightening, Hada Labo embodies the Japanese ideal of healthy, plump skin. Did you know that “Hada Labo” translates to “Skin Lab” ?? Well, I just found out a few days ago too.
Hada Labo Shirojyun Whitening Lotion Ingredients
Na-2 hyaluronate, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid (nano-sized hyaluronic acid), Mg vitamin C phosphate, vitamin E, quinine extract (hattomugi extract), DPG, concentrated glycerin, sorbitol solution, POP methyl glucoside, glycerin, xanthan gum, Carboxyvinyl polymer, TEA, POE laureate (20) sorbitol, BG, VP / styrene copolymer emulsion, paraben
Packaging
The toner comes in a 170ml simple bottle. It doesn’t come in a box and the entire bottle is written in Japanese (help). I really wished it came with English instructions just like most Korean products do but it doesn’t. The only thing written in English was “brightening lotion” at the back of the bottle and that’s it.
Scent
It has no fragrance or essential oils which makes it great for those with sensitive skin but it does have a funny smell I can’t place my head around. It does disappear though after application.
Consistency
It has a light watery texture. I personally prefer toners with a little bit of thick consistency like the Cosrx propolis toner or the I’m from Rice toner. It very fast adsorbing though.
My thoughts
First of all, tell me why I thought the Hada Labo Shirojyun Whitening Lotion was ACTUALLY a lotion. Apparently In Asian skincare, the term “lotion” is used to describe a product that falls between a toner and a moisturizer in terms of consistency and function. This can lead to confusion for those accustomed to Western skincare terminology, where toner is typically a watery product applied after cleansing. In Asian skincare, lotions provide additional hydration and moisture, bridging the gap between toning and moisturizing steps.
The toner is not that bad. It’s fast absorbing and hydrating. I expected the hydration to be more but it wasn’t. If you are specifically after hydration, you’re better off getting a product from the Goku Jyun range. I personally was after the whitening and brightening effects which is the main focus of the Shirojyun Whitening Lotion. It’s important to note that the term “whitening” in Asian skincare often refers to brightening and evening out the complexion rather than actually changing the skin’s natural color.
I have been using it in the morning and it’s a great summer toner because it’s very lightweight. It layers well and I have noticed my skin getting smoother and softer. It’s also very affordable for a 170ml product that will last for months. So far, I haven’t really noticed any brightening effects although I’m not sure if I’m expecting results too soon. I will continue using it to see if I finally get any brightening effects from it so stay tuned for an update.

Final thoughts on the hada labo Shirojyun Whitening Lotion
Overall it was a good toner but I don’t see myself repurchasing it although I would love to try the hada labo Goku Jyun range. If you’re looking for a simple lightweight toner, this might be the toner for you.
I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did while writing it. Have you tried any hada labo products? Let me know in the comments
