Table of Contents
It’s a brand new year and I think it’s right to have a glow-up. Glow up is basically changing things in your life to become a better version of yourself. I think it’s we all invest in ourselves and try to improve daily.
If you’re reading this, This is your sign to try this glow-up challenge with me and watch how you can transform your life in just 2 weeks.
Without further delay, let’s get into it.
Glow-up challenge: How to have a glow up
Before we get started with the Glow-up challenge, it’s great to reset. Resetting is basically going back into your default settings and starting all over again. I have a detailed post on how to reset your life in 2022 and crush your goals but I’m going to highlight a few points from that.
Declutter
I can’t overemphasize how important it is to declutter every now and then. I love decluttering. When I declutter, it automatically puts me in a better mood and it helps with my anxiety. Declutter your phone, tablet, laptop, social media accounts, emails, wardrobe, room, house, mind, everything. When you declutter, you will feel like you’re starting over and this will make you even more motivated to reset and restart your life.
Decluttering is something that might take a few days to get completed so take your time. You can decide to declutter your devices today and then your wardrobe tomorrow and so on. Space things out so that you don’t get overwhelmed.
Create a vision board and set goals
A vision board is called a vision board for a reason. It allows you to visualize what your dream life will look like if you work hard on them. A great and easy-to-use design software I highly recommend is canva.
I have also seen a lot of people creating a vision board on Pinterest and it totally makes sense because Pinterest is a visual platform and you definitely find all the pictures you need to visualize your 2022 goals. I think I am going to try this year as well.
Goal setting is such a fun activity to do. You can write your goals down On a piece of paper or in your journal if you have one. I am slowly transitioning into digital planning so for 2022, all my goals and plans for the year will be in my Notion dashboard. I absolutely love Notion and my notion template is everything I need to manage my entire life.
Now, once you have all your realistic goals written down, it’s time to plan out how you will actually achieve them. Take your goals and break them into seasonal goals and then monthly goals. Grab those monthly goals and further break them down into weekly and daily goals. You need to create a framework that will work for you without overwhelming you.
At the end of this exercise, you should have tasks you will be doing daily that will help you reach your weekly goals which will make up your monthly goals and eventually your 2022 goals.
How to glow up mentally
glowing up physically is important but mental glow up is more important. Here are a few ways you can glow up mentally.
Prioritize yourself
Learn to start saying no. I know it can be difficult especially when you don’t want to look like a bad guy but say no to things you don’t want to do. Put your happiness and health first. Always trust your instincts. If you feel like doing something will be bad, don’t do it.
Learn to love yourself
You are the only person you will forever be stuck with. Learn to love your flaws and imperfections. That’s what makes each human unique. If you can’t change it, embrace it. Loving yourself also means taking good care of your body. Work out regularly, eat more fruits and veggies, and cut down on sugar and junk food. Once you’ve accepted that this is who you are and you’re happy with that, you can literally achieve anything.
Read more books
I have always been someone that finds it difficult to find time to read books apart from my school books but I currently started making time to read personal development books and it has been amazing. I am currently reading show your Work by Austin Kleon and I am learning a lot from it. Reading is really good for the brain and if you’re not a native English speaker like me, it really helps you to build your vocabulary and get better at English. As one of my favorite quotes says Readers are leaders.
Keep learning
I love learning new things and skills. Just because you’re done with school doesn’t mean you should stop learning. In fact, learning should continue throughout your entire life. I started this blog because I loved to write and in the process, I learned how to create simple graphics, social media strategy, and marketing. With my simple graphic design knowledge, I was able to start my first Etsy shop called Rumieprints where I create and sell printables and templates that help people to get organized and productive. Talking about organization…
Get organized
Being organized is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I have another post about how to organize your life so if you’re struggling with organization, that might just be the right post for you.
When it comes to organization, I tend to struggle to find a work-life school balance. I now use Notion to plan my entire life out and it has been so amazing! I can’t emphasize how easy it is to organize your life with Notion. This is the notion template I am currently using and I have a whole section in my Etsy shop for Notion templates if you would like to try one out.
Stop comparing yourself with others
I know it’s easier said than done but you have to stop comparing. People only show what they want you to see and you don’t know what happens behind closed doors. The first thing to do if you want to stop comparing your life with others is to start appreciating the little things in your life. Be grateful for what you already have. Another thing I like to do is to unfollow, unsubscribe to anyone that makes me feel like I’m not good enough. So far these 2 have been working out great for me and I think you should try it.
Limit your screen time
I know this can be difficult but try to spend more time away from your devices. Try a new hobby, go for a walk, read a book or go chat with your neighbors.
If you have an Apple device you can set limits for how many minutes or hours you want to use certain apps for. I highly recommend setting these limits for your social media apps. If you’re someone like me that runs an online business, this will help you to stay productive. You might have a high screen time but with these limits in place, it will help you to actually work on things that really matter.
My mornings from 5 am to 9 am are my digital-free time and an hour before I go to bed. I know it’s not much but taking small steps adds up in the end.
How to glow up physically
Create Routines
Routines are very important if you want to get consistent with the things you do and actually see results. I love having routines because I know everything I need to do in the morning, night, and weekends. Here are some routines you need to have.
Morning routine
Your morning routine is what will help you to prepare for the day. You can make it to be as simple as possible or as complex as you want but the most important thing is that you should stick to it. Here is how to create a healthy morning routine and the best morning routine if you’re still in school, like me.
Skincare routine
What’s a glow-up without working on your skin and body? You need to have a skincare routine. I personally love my skincare routine and I find the application so therapeutic. If you need help with that, here is how to create a skincare routine, my favorite products from Cerave, the ordinary and Good Molecules.
The rest of your body also deserves the same love. Make sure you exfoliate weekly, moisturize properly, and use good quality products. Here are some of my favorite body care products and my go-to homemade body butter for glowing skin.
Workout routine
If you can go to the gym, that will be amazing but home workouts are also great. Chloe ting and koboko fitness have some great workout videos and challenges you can try.
Drink more water
Drinking enough water daily will keep your skin plump and hydrated, your hair shiny and even help you to clear your acne! Drink your water sis.
Take care of your hair
Wash your hair bi-weekly and trim it regularly. There is this simple pre-poo treatment I learned that requires only aloe Vera and olive oil. Form a paste and apply it to your hair 30mins before washing. It makes my hair very soft, well moisturized and my curls even show. Do yourself a favor and get an aloe Vera plant. It has so many benefits. If you don’t like olive oil, you can substitute it with coconut oil or any other oil of your choice. An avocado hair mask is also a great option.
Get a mani-padi
Don’t be walking around with crusty heels. Get a manicure and pedicure. It will help you to maintain soft, good-looking hands and feet. If you can’t budget for that, you can always do that at home by yourself during your at-home spa day or selfcare Sundays.
Update your wardrobe
Buy pieces that actually look good on your body type. When rock a great outfit, it instantly puts you in a great mood and boosts your confidence. Donate/sell clothing items that no longer serve you. When it comes to finding outfit inspiration, Pinterest and Instagram will literally be your best friend. Just be careful not to buy so many trending pieces because once they go out of style, you will also want to get rid of them. Basics are the key.
Fix your posture
If you use your laptop a lot, you probably have a bad posture. There are tons of exercises you can practice on YouTube that help A lot with posture. If you want to be more feminine, your posture has to be great.
Create healthy habits
Habits are what make or break us. Have an honest conversation with yourself and make a list of all the bad habits you want to get rid of and the good ones you want to adopt. It might take a little while but if you start today, you will get there in no time. Using habit trackers makes this super easy.
