Things I regret bringing to college
Table of Contents
Being a college freshman comes with a lot of experience, both good and not-so-good. Although I managed to bring dorm room essentials that I needed daily, I still overpacked.
Bringing things you don’t need to your tiny dorm room is the worst thing you can do especially if you are going to school in another state or even country.
In my previous post, I spoke about things I regret not bringing to college and in this post, I will be sharing things I regret bringing to college.

What not to bring to college
Too many clothes
Trust me when I say you won’t wear even half of them. Your style is bound to change when you go to college due to so many factors. Weather, experiences and so much more.
I have always thought I was skinny jeans and top kind of girl but later on, I discovered I loved gowns and skirts. I went on a shopping spree and got more clothes that I was comfortable in and I was left with a huge amount of clothes that I don’t wear anymore. I had to donate most of them.
What to do instead
Get only the basics and a few pieces you love and would wear anytime so that When you get to school and start shopping for new clothes, you’ll be fine.
Another great thing is that there are usually a lot of fun activities happening around campus and a lot of them give out free shirts and hoodies sometimes so before you know it, you might never have to buy a tee shirt in your life again.
Textbooks
Don’t buy your textbooks before you start classes! I made this mistake and got my textbooks before lectures started and later found out that I had the wrong editions of the textbooks and I had to buy new ones.
I currently only use soft copies and this has saved me so much space in my dorm room. Textbooks are so bulky and not convenient at all.
What to do instead
Get an iPad and buy the soft copies of the books you need. Reading on your iPad is very easy and an iPad is very compact. If you must use the hard copies, I’m sure your library will have them. Go and get them there so that you can return them anytime you’re done.
Let’s not even talk about how much money you will save doing this in the long run.
Items of value
if you have any expensive item that is too precious for you, leave it at home. In my freshman year, I had this bracelet that meant a lot to me. I brought it to college and unfortunately, I ended up losing it because the year ended. One of the things I regret bringing to college
What to do instead
If you have to bring items of value, make sure you get a dorm safe lock. This will help you keep it secure in your room.
Too many shoes
Tell me why I brought 5 pairs of heels in my freshman year like I was there to party all year long. This is surely one of the things I regret bringing to college.
One thing about college is you will get your steps in! You will walk around a lot and the last thing you want is to hurt your ankles.
What to do instead
Get very comfortable shoes that you can walk and even run in if you have to. Get a sneaker, crocs, sandals, slippers, and maybe one fancy shoe. That’s it. You don’t need more than that.
Bulky luggage
This is still one of the things I regret bringing to college. Like what was I thinking? I had 3 huge bulky luggage filled with my essentials but when I was done unpacking, I didn’t know where to put them. They ended up taking a good portion of my space. Please, don’t make that mistake as well.e
What to do instead
Get collapsible luggage so that once you’re done unpacking, you can place them under your bed or stack them in a small corner. They take less space and are easy to store.
Rug
You don’t need a rug if you’re not living alone. Rugs get dirty easily and scrubbing a rug will be the last thing you would want to do.
I know that some people get rugs because the flooring is horrible. If that is your case, you can get one. For me, a rug is one of the things I regret bringing to college because I didn’t need it at all.
Unnecessary kitchen appliances
In my opinion, all you need is a microwave, a small fridge, and an electric kettle. Students bring toasters and Keurig, and I honestly feel like they aren’t necessary. You Need a fridge to store leftovers and things that need to be kept in a cool environment and a microwave to reheat your leftovers. You can use your microwave to do so many things but that will be a topic for another day. If you love to have coffee or tea, you can make that using an electric kettle.
Printer
Why did I feel like a printer was necessary? There are printing centers or printer machines everywhere on campus. If you’re thinking of bringing a printer, just drop it off now. You probably won’t use it and it takes up a lot of space on your desk that you can use for other great dorm desk essentials.
Tv
Tv takes a lot of space and it’s just a lot. I will only recommend a tv if you’re living in an apartment. If you have a laptop or an iPad, you pretty much have a tv. You can use those to watch anything you want. So there is no need for a tv. Save your coins and use them for something more useful.
