Study tips for college students
Are your grades stagnant and do you want to improve them? Then it’s time to do things a little differently.
In this post, I will be sharing 20 study tips you can try that will surely boost your grades. I have personally utilized the majority of them and they work so well. Let’s get into it.
- Minimize Distractions: Stay away from social media and avoid distractions like TikTok. Allow yourself to be bored, which can make studying more appealing.
- Create a Daily Plan: Plan your days and check off tasks as you complete them to feel productive. This can boost your motivation and help establish a productive habit.
- Solve as many past questions as possible: This is one of the study tips that made a huge impact on my grades. When you study past questions from your courses (most are usually available in the library or school cafes), you get to see how your professors structure their questions, topics they like to set questions from, and much more. It’s also a great way to test your knowledge and see if you understand the topic.
- Prioritize sleep: This is important and make sure you avoid pulling all-nighters as much as possible. Make sure you’re getting your daily 8 hours of sleep. This will help you to stay focused while studying.
- Have study buddies: This is such an underrated study tip that works so well. Have friends that you can study with. This works even better if you’re taking the same courses. Study together and at the end of your study sessions, ask each other questions about the course you studied. I noticed that these Q&A sessions are what get stuck to me the most and I don’t forget what we discussed easily. Having study buddies is also a great way to have accountability.
- Set a Study Routine: Develop a consistent study schedule that works for you. This might include setting specific study hours or following a particular daily routine.
- Choose an Effective Study Environment: Find a comfortable, distraction-free space where you can study for extended periods.
- Maintain Healthy Habits: Stay hydrated, eat healthily, and avoid excessive caffeine to keep your brain functioning optimally.
- Incorporate Exercise: Regular physical activity can help keep your mind sharp and focused during study sessions.
- Use Background Music or Noise: Listen to classical music or other genres that help you concentrate. You can also use white noise or repeating songs to minimize distractions.
- Apply the Pomodoro Technique: Study in intervals (e.g., 25 minutes of studying followed by a 5-minute break) to maintain focus and productivity.
- Utilize Flashcards: Use flashcards for active recall and to reinforce your knowledge.
- Avoid All-Nighters: Complete your study tasks ahead of time to ensure you’re well-rested before exams.
- Start Your Day Early: Wake up early with a clear morning routine to begin your day fresh and ready to study.
- Set Daily Goals and Gamify Tasks: Use apps to turn study tasks into quests with rewards, making studying more engaging.
- Review Regularly: Regularly review your flashcards and study material to reinforce learning and retention.
- Organize and Plan: At the start of a semester, plan all assignments, tests, and important dates. Use tools like Google Calendar or notion to manage your schedule. Speaking of planning, our new Academic notion planner has everything you need to plan, set goals, manage, and track everything in your life.
- Use Active Learning Strategies: Take short notes, revisit concepts frequently, and discuss topics with peers or professors. Set artificial deadlines to stay motivated but avoid complete elimination of distractions.
- Adapt and Personalize: Find ways to connect your studies to your interests to make learning more enjoyable. Be flexible and adapt your study environment as needed to maintain motivation.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Don’t be afraid to ask your professors or fellow students for help when you need it. This will help you get unstuck faster and not get discouraged.
