Good hobbies for college students
Gardening
Gardening is such a fun thing to do especially during the spring season. All you have to do is get some pots, soil, and seedlings of your choice and start planting them. If you have no idea where to start from, watch a few YouTube videos on gardening for beginners and start with the easiest plants to grow. You can always keep your plant on your windows in your dorm and watch it grow over time. Having plants in your space is also beneficial because it’s such a mood booster and the air surrounding you will always be fresh.
Painting
I love painting and I admire those that are good at painting. Painting is a very easy and cheap hobby to start with because all you need is some paper or canvas, water paint, and your imagination. There are also tons of YouTube videos that do all sorts of paintings and tutorials that you can always follow.
You can also try digital painting and drawing on procreate if you have an iPad and later, you can always sell them as digital downloads.
Cooking/Baking
Cooking is a life skill and I find cooking to be therapeutic. It’s amazing how you can mix a few random ingredients together and create a very delicious meal. The same goes for baking. You can always try a cooking challenge or baking challenge and make different meals and snacks for the next few days. Don’t forget to document everything! some of my favorite cooking and baking channels on YouTube are Preppy kitchen and The Cooking foodie. Their recipes are easy to follow and they make use of ingredients readily available.
Photography
One thing I regret not doing when I was in high school and at the beginning of college was taking more pictures. Pictures of places I’ve been to, food I ate, pictures with my friends. I wish I did that and now I would’ve had something I could always look at and remember the good times. It’s still not too late. Start documenting your life. Take pictures and videos of things you find interesting. The flowers, the moon, anything you want. Trust me, you will be happy you did in the future.
You can always start taking pictures with your phone but if you want to take it a step further, you can get a digital camera.
Blogging
Blogging is one of the best things I have ever done. I have learned so many different skills just by blogging like writing, copywriting, graphic design, data analysis, and even a few coding. It made me so happy when I wrote and someone comments that they found my post helpful. I started it for fun and this year, it has actually started making me some $$$ which is amazing. I’m very grateful and I can’t wait to see how far it will take me.
Start a YouTube channel
You should know by now that videos are the future. More and more people are consuming videos more than any other form of information. If you’re not camera-shy start a YouTube channel and talk about anything you want. You can take us along your day-to-day life, tell us about a book you read in one sitting, and teach us how you do your thing. In fact, you don’t even have to show your face if you’re not comfortable with that and still be successful. All you need is determination and consistency.
Start a small business
Did you know that a lot of people start a small business because they find it fun? You can start a small business if you enjoy, designing, and packing orders, and don’t mind a little side income. Starting a business is different in each country so make sure you do your research.
Pottery
I have been to the pottery shop once and it was so fun. I made a little bowl and painted it later on. This will be such a fun hobby and can help with your concentration if you get distracted easily. Normally, pottery shops organize weekly or monthly workshops for people interested in the area so if this is something you want to try, make sure you check out the pottery shop nearest to you.

Reading
Reading is very important. Reading helps you to improve your writing and also build your vocabulary. It also exposes you to different writing styles. The amount of knowledge you gain from reading is immeasurable. Find a genre you like and read the most popular books in that genre. This will keep you hooked and wanting more.
Calligraphy
Calligraphy is very beautiful and learning it looks so fun. If you’re interested in perfecting your cursive and learning new skills, try calligraphy. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube as well and you can always buy practice worksheets on Etsy or Amazon.
Crocheting
I used to crochet when I was little because my cousin was obsessed with it. Surprisingly, it’s way easier than knitting, and crochet products are becoming popular. Once you learn how to crochet, you can make yourself a nice sweater or even a stuffed animal.
Watching documentaries
If you’re a curious cat, watching documentaries will be the perfect hobby for you. There are a lot of documentaries on YouTube and Netflix on the greatest people, most dangerous criminals, how things are made and so much more. Anything you’re curious about, there is probably a documentary out there for it.
Learn a new language
Although I believe learning a language would’ve been way easier when you were still a child but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible now. You can take free classes or even online professional courses on the language you want to learn. Another great advantage of learning a new language is that you can boost your resume just by being able to speak another language and this can land you a job as a translator.
Journalling
Journalling is the perfect hobby for anyone that overthinks. Nothing feels better than writing down how you feel especially when you don’t want to share it with anyone.
Exercising
this is pretty self-explanatory. If you are an active person, exercising with be your best friend. A lot of activities can be categorized as exercise so find the ones you like most and get consistent with them.
